DESIGN

The Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion is a 68-keys, compact mechanical keyboard with nearly the same footprint of a classic 60% keyboard but with the added functionality of the arrow keys and a column with 4 navigation extra keys.

As you might have already noticed, this keyboard has a wooden case; this is not a plastic/metal painted with a wood pattern, instead, this is a 100% true Walnut Wooden case.

On top of that, the case is made of a single CNC wood carved piece that results in an impeccably clean case without seams nor top & bottom covers bolted together.

Above the number row, the keyboard holds a gold-colored, metal plate strip that adds an embellishing detail to the overall design.

The Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion looks so unique that almost seems like an antique handcrafted instrument that you found in a remote Chinese temple.

To be honest, this Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion might be the most aesthetically enchanting keyboard reviewed so far.

The Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion is one of the 3 variants available for the MU01 series, along with the:

If we would had to give a very subjective preferential opinion, we find the Mountain Seclusion to be the most alluring one among their variants.

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD

As we have mentioned and you have seen already, the case of the Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion is made of Walnut wood, yet what you cannot appreciate from photos is that the brand has not cheaped-out with the amount of wood used to build it as it presents around 1cm of wood thickness.

Internally, the keyboard has a hot-swappable, south-facing board compatible with switches replacement without any soldering involved.

Moreover, the Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion sports a gasket-mounted design and a multi-layering for sound dampening and enhancing the typing feel on each key press.

On the bottom, the case has 2 long rubberized feet and a third full-sized feet/strip on the upper part, that runs along all the width of the case.

If you remove this long strip/feet you will access a couple of screws that can be removed to easily service and/or customize the internals of the keyboards such as replacing/lubing the pre-assembled plate-mounted stabilizers (screw-in stabs are also compatible) or even replace the rechargeable battery.

KEYCAPS

If the wood case of the Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion was not enough to make it unique, the custom keycaps set equipped with the unit make it even more special.

The theme of the keycaps follow a color pattern combination with different brown gamut resembling wood and an “aged” cream for the main keys that look like the color and style of an old Papyrus.

To add up to the charming style of the keyboard, the keycaps have Chinese and Western fonts and different detailed designs that include flora, fauna and landscapes from Chinese-inspired paintings – it even includes the complete poem “Autumn Twilight in the Mountain Abode”.

On top of that, the keycaps are not only gorgeous but have also premium PBT quality with a thickness and body robustness that is far superior than most other PBT keycaps sets preassembled on other keyboards.

These keycaps has a MOA profile and ensure long-lasting, fade-free endurance thanks to it Dye-Sub design/processing and have a buttery smooth finish with just a tad of texture/grain.

We liked so much these keycaps that we would had loved if the keyboard came with a couple of extra keycaps but we might be asking for too much already.

CONNECTIVITY

This Akko keyboard has a triple connectivity system with one wired one and 2 wireless.

Wired, the keyboard is used through a detachable USB-C connection that plug to a recessed/reinforced port on the back edge of the case.

Wirelessly, you will be able to use the keyboard either with a Bluetooth connection or using the bundled dongle for 2/4G wireless connection.

In total, the keyboard can connect with up to 5 different devices by using the wired, 2.4G wireless and 3 slots of Bluetooth connections.

If you got your Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion and are wondering where the switch mode is placed, it is hidden under the CAPS LOCK keycap as the switch has been placed in the board right next to the Caps switch.

Basically this means that to set the connection mode switch to the desired mode, you will first need to remove the Caps Lock keycaps and then move the small switch to the corresponding position.

Of course, this is an “unorthodox” placement for a mode switch but this is not the first time that we encounter this, as another keyboard from Akko that we have reviewed had the exact same switch position and design – the specific model was the Akko MOD007B HE PC Tokyo.

The Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion is a classy and lovely mechanical keyboard that thanks to all the prime build components offer a delightful experience to use for typing and as a mainstream daily keyboard.

GAMING

If you want to be the most “intriguing” gamer in the room, the Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion will certainly catch the attention of other gamers.

On top of that, thanks to its compact 65% form factor, premium components and features such as hot-swappable, programmable/macros, etc.; the Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion can cover the needs of most gamers.

It is fair to note that Akko does well documents the specific polling rate of this keyboard but it is supposed to reach 1000Hz of polling rate (wired and 2.4G) and it does explicitly lists that it offers N-key rollover capability.

PRODUCTIVITY

If your main use for the Akko MU01 will be productivity and office work, we would recommend to match it with a numpad to better complement the absence of the extra keys by its 65% layout.

Nonetheless, the compact size, premium feel and tri-mode connectivity can make it a refined companion to carry around for quick work tasks.

The keyboard is equipped with a full RGB LED backlit design, which can be personalized through Akko’s software.

As a personal preference, we liked better setting the RGB backlit either completely off or set to a single, always-on color near the brown gamut (like orange or brown itself)

Due to the minimalistic design, you will see that there are no status LED indicators along the case, still the keyboard offers an independent LED light for the spacebar that servers an indicator of the battery status according to the color shown.

SOUND

The Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion with Akko V3 Pro Piano switches exhibited one of the best marbly-thock sound out of the box with a quality that has nothing to envy even top-tier barebone kits.

Every keypress responds with a deep and clean thock mechanical sound without any type of undesired resonance nor pinging of any type.

If we would had to be very picky to point out something, we added a tiny bit of extra lube to the purple plate-mounted stabs of the spacebar to make them perfectly-smoothly silent.

This mechanical keyboard from Akko is fully compatible with Akko Cloud PC software, which keeps maturing over time, offering full customization capabilities and intuitive controls that are not overwhelmingly complicated to understand nor manage.
