Epomaker CYPHER 81, a mid-sized variant of the Epomaker Cypher series.

The Cypher family of Epomaker keyboards is a newer product line from the brand which might not be as varied as the TH series so far but it is growing little by little.

We have reviewed almost all models from the Cypher series (Cypher 96) and we have to admit that we liked quite a bit the larger sibling of this smaller Cypher 81 model.

DESIGN

The Epomaker Cypher 81 has a 75% layout with 81 keys, 1 knob and 1 display screen.

This makes it keyboard with a practical size/format that includes arrow keys, navigation keys and the full F number row; while still preserving a way more compact and less-cumbersome footprint than TKL and larger models.

On the top right edge you will find the display screen and sitting next to it a silver and white colored rotational encoder with a multi-function button feature.

The back edge holds the USB-C port and 2 independent switches with large, well-labeled printings that serve to set the keeb in the desired connection mode and Win/Mac mode.

On the bottom, you can find adjustable feet (2 positions), 4x silicone feet and a hidden compartment for the wireless dongle.

As you can see from the photos a strip light is placed as an embellishing detail on the top right case but also serves as a status indicator (Caps lock, etc.) and a visual separator for the main and navigation keys.

The Epomaker Cypher 81 is not available in any further colors than the one that you are seeing us review but, the overall looks is so nice that we really do not care.

DISPLAY SCREEN

From one part, the display of the Epomaker Cypher 81 is a nice addition with a smart design that integrates menu and setting navigation with the possibility to control lighting patterns, brightness, speed and color and show relevant status info.

In spite of this, the display screen is noticeably smaller (0.85 inches) than many other competitors but, at the same time, the information being displayed and statuses are a better organized and highlighted than on some other keyboard’s screens.

This screen is very similar to the one found in a couple of recently reviewed models and it does have the same “weak” aspect of having an overly small font used for the date.

Nonetheless you gain access to info such as:

CONSTRUCTION & BUILD

We have reviewed hundreds of keyboards using multi-layering for dampening and sound enhancement but the Epomaker Cypher 81 surprised the team with even more layers than premium, high-tier keyboards, which includes:

• IXPE Switch Pad
• Poron Sandwich Foam
• PET Sound-Enhancement Pad
• Poron Switch Pad
• Bottom Silicone
• Spacebar EVA Foam

On top of that, the board is hot-swappable and compatible with 3-pin and 5-pin switches (no soldering needed) and you also get a gasket-mount design plus plate-mount stabs and polycarbonate plate.

The case of the Cypher is not metal but ABS plastic but, seeing all the premium guts inside, there is not much to envy against metal and wooden keyboards.

KEYCAPS

The keycaps of this Epomaker keyboard have Cherry profile and are made of PBT double-shot with oil and fade resistance.

The finish of the keycaps is buttery smooth with no grit but, still, showed better grip than some heavily textured keycap sets.

We find the keycaps to be very aesthetically pleasing and refreshing; while the knob matches well the spirit of the keyboard and offers smooth rotational movement, we did find it to wobble a bit.

The encoder responds with tactile feedback per notch but no audible clicks.

SWITCHES

The Epomaker Cypher 81 can be bought with 2 models of switches:

• Epomaker Wisteria
• Epomaker Flamingo

Both of these switches are of linear type and are the part of the most popular switches of the brand; which we have reviewed endless times.

The specific variant that we are reviewing came pre-assembled with Epomaker Wisteria switches (one of our favorites), which are excellent switches with a balanced personality that can cover with high-efficiency any task required (even gaming)

CONNECTIVITY

The Cypher 81 can be used wired and wirelessly and can make use of 4 wireless banks over 2 different wireless connectivity technologies:

• Bluetooth (3 banks)
• 2.4G wireless (with the bundled dongle)

The wired connection is detachable and has a modern USB-C type port.

Through either the USB or 2.4G connections, gamers can benefit from 1000Hz polling rate and latencies of 12ms and 13ms (respectively) – anti-ghosting is supported.

LIGHTING

The white case and light colored pattern combines very well with the south-facing RGB LEDs of the board.

Furthermore, the long vertical strip light separating the main keys with the extra navigation keys looks gorgeous without becoming tacky nor overly screaming “I am a gamer keyboard”

SOUND

The Epomaker Cypher 81 with Wisteria linear switches has a phenomenal sound profile that you can only get with premium mechanical keyboard or with some careful, time-consuming manual modding over a good keyboard.

You can expect a refined thocky sound with a slight poppy flavor and absolutely zero noise issues (pinging, resonance, etc.)

On top of that, the brand has nailed again the factory lubing applied over the stabilizers performing without a mushy feel and never exhibiting rattling noises nor needing some extra lube to be applied by the user – common issue that we have seen on most Akko keyboards reviewed.

BATTERY

The internal battery of the Cypher 81 has a capacity of 4000mAh, which is usually the common standard used by the brand for 75% keyboards but due to the lovely strip light and display screen it might had been nice seeing a bit of a larger battery inside.
