? TRN V60, the latest earphones from TRN with triple drivers.

TRN has been expanding worldwide with their latest releases, the TRN V10, TRN V20 and now the TRN V60. TRN does not name their models according to the number of drivers, in fact, the TRN V10 is a quad-driver headphone, the TRN V20 a dual driver model and the TRN V60 a triple-driver IEM.

The TRN V60 features a single balanced armature and a double dynamic driver (specifically: 1x 10 mm + 1x 3.8 mm). Truly, TRN informs contradictory tech specs for the TRN V60. The front of the packaging explicitly says “Quad Driver” but followed by a strange writing saying “1 Triple Driver + 2 Balanced Armature” and on the rear it is informed that they hold inside 1x balanced armature + 1x 10mm DD + 1x 3.8mm DD. Of all these tech specs, the last one seems to be the more accurate according to some disassembly diagrams available.

The TRN V60 has a great construction quality improvement over the TRN V20. TRN left behind the toyish rubberized build of the V20 and opted for a two-material construction with a back metal plate and a main housing made of plastics quality inline with KZ earphones. The overall durability sensation is much higher than the previous model and also offers a more refined look.

The cable is detachable with a “helix” design and metal sections (cable bifurcation, 3.5 mm plug, mic/remote). Inline there is a single-button mic/remote (If you buy the TRN V60 version with a microphone and remote)

The cable connector is 0.75mm bi-pin, exactly like the TRN V20 and all KZ earphones with detachable cables.

Accessories & Packaging

The TRN V60 unboxing results in 2 pair of eartips and the detachable cable. Everything comes inside a medium-sized, rectangular box – exactly the same as the TRN V20.

Bass & Sub Bass

The TRN V60 bass is deep and punchy with an energetic tuning capable of covering all music genres. Unfortunately, the lack of highs makes their bass sound extremely boosted and over-powering.

Applying an EQ bass gets strongly punchier and crazily deeper.

During our extreme bass tests the TRN V60 managed to take up to 35% of the maximum power coming from a Fiio E12 amplifier (high gain, bass boost turned on and a custom basshead EQ). Expect the exact same response as the TRN V20 with a highly more impacting and deeper bass but without getting into basshead territory.

Mids & Vocals

The TRN V60 mids are extremely warm, higher mids are crisp but their overall sound is muffled, very unbalanced and congested.

With an EQ mid-bass bleed is reduced but their mids become even weirder with boxy and tinny addition to the already unbalanced sound.

Highs & Treble

The TRN V60 highs are dark, muddy and do not resolve any detail. Their highs are very recessed and odd sounding. According to their response and measurements, it is more probable that our TRN V60 have a defective balanced armature than that TRN decided to do put such an unresponsive balanced armature inside.

By insanely feeding up their frequencies above 4kHz, the TRN V60 shows much more what they should have been without the extreme recession of their highs (or possible defective balanced armature)

NOTE REGARDING SOUND OF THE TRN V60: Truly, the TRN V60 and TRN V20 have perfectly twin response from the lowest bass frequencies up to 4kHz but the TRN V60 have an extreme drop of all frequencies above 4kHz that disrupt their overall sound and make them sound very unbalanced affecting even the sound quality of their mids and bass. As we have mentioned above, such recession from a triple driver with a dedicated balanced armature for highs makes us believe that our TRN V60 unit might have a defective balanced armature.

Sound Leak

The sound that leaks out of the TRN V60 is fairly under control with levels that are inline with most average earphones, with possibly a tiny bit less leakage.

Sound Isolation

Noise isolation of the TRN V60 is fair and about the same of most normal earphones. This means that they can provide partial isolation at most volume settings and can offer an almost absolute isolation if listening to music at an extremely high volume.

Comfort

TRN seems to be hearing the critics from it’s clients. One of the most recurring complaints of the TRN V20 were their long nozzles which some found getting too deep in the ear canals; TRN has “repaired” this in the TRN V60, which uses shorter nozzles more inline with standard earphones.

The “improved” nozzles and better constructive material make them a TRN model with very good comfort and fit.

Response to Equalization

The response to EQ of the TRN V60 was strong on lower frequencies, noticeably fixing on highs but detrimental for their already bad-sounding mids and vocals.
