? We are reviewing the Xiaomi Mi Dual Driver Earphones BRE01JY, a dual driver semi-in-ear headphone from Xiaomi which was recently launched.

The Xiaomi Mi Dual Driver Earphones BRE01JY features an unusual semi in-ear design with an hybrid style in between an in-ear headphone and an earbud – the easiest way to explain it, think of the Apple Airpods. But there is another feature that makes them even more special; inside the housings they hold a dual driver configuration with a sort of Woofer-Twitter drivers, with the last one made of ceramics. Ceramics is a pretty uncommon material used for the construction of drivers.

A Woofer+Twitter is what you usually find in speakers or car audio where they separate the drivers into specialized ones to reproduce different ranges of the audio spectrum more efficiently.

The housings of the Xiaomi Mi Dual Driver Earphones BRE01JY are made of plastic with a narrowing back end that makes them extremely easy to grab and handle. A metal back plate is found on the rear section the housings.

If you are used to in-ear headphones or have never used earbuds you should know that, by design, earbuds are unable to provide the same level of isolation, seal and, consequently, also depth of bass. We will see how they perform later on, but do not be surprised if they lack sub-bass.

The cables of the Xiaomi Mi Dual Driver Earphones BRE01JY are rounded and very rubberized cable. The mini-stereo plug has a L shaped shape and is particularly small, this makes them a good match to use with smartphones as the plug will not protrude much.

The cable holds a 3 button mic/remote with dedicated volume buttons, this section is made of plastics and, strangely, not up-to the standards of other Xiaomi’s 3-button remotes.

As many other semi-in-ear headphones, the Xiaomi Mi Dual Driver Earphones BRE01JY do not use eartips (some do), Xiaomi does not provide any accessory with them. Everything comes inside a mini plastic package.

Bass & Sub Bass

The Xiaomi Mi Dual Driver Earphones BRE01JY bass has good punch but, as expected, lacks depth. It is not an anemically lacking depth but a “earbud as-usual” level of depth-lacking – actually offering more depth than many average earbuds. Nonetheless, their bass has fun mid-bass that is energetic and fairly strong to cover most genres without issues. Truly, for an earbud they offer quite a punch (not depth).

Applying an EQ, reveals an outstanding extra amount of sub-bass depth that is deeper than many uneqed in-ear headphones, punch also gets powerful.

Mostly every earphone, headphone and earbud gets through our standardized extreme basshead tests to evaluate their basshead potential and any rumble and impact that each model can possibly provide. The Xiaomi Mi Dual Driver Earphones BRE01JY did not go through these tests as their design and sub-bass response shows that this test would be irrelevant.

Mids & Vocals

The Xiaomi Mi Dual Driver Earphones have clear lower mids, mild mid-bass bleed and crisp higher mids. Lower vocals do not sound distant nor too laid back. Higher mids are not recessed but neither forward nor harsh.

With an EQ there is phenomenal clearing up of lower vocals. Higher mids are already nearly forward so you should not EQ them or will risk to introduce harshness.

Positioning makes drastic changes to their sound, we found that ensuring a deeper fit + rotating them slightly forward (with the cable end tilted +/- 30 degrees backwards) improves their overall sound; instead if placed straight or tilted back their sound deteriorates exponentially.

Highs & Treble

The Xiaomi BRE01JY highs have good brightness and resolve a fairly nice amount of detail, some piercing highs can be perceived if the track has very strong peaks.

Sound of the Xiaomi Mi Dual Driver Earphones BRE01JY is particularly open and spatial, much more than most in-ear headphones.

Using an EQ, once again, there is an outstanding response with great enhancement of their already open sound and spatial sensation, brightness is also noticeably increased and additional detail  is resolved. Despite the strong increment, their piercing and sibilant peaks do not get empowered by much.

Sound Leak

The sound that leaks out of the Xiaomi BRE01JY is hearable when you listen to music above a moderate volume. For city use, their leaking levels will not be much of a problem but consider this depending on where you are planning to use them.

Sound Isolation

Earbuds and semi-in-ear headphones are not designed to offer a strong seal and, consequently, they usually do not shine in the sound isolation department. Nonetheless, the Xiaomi Mi Dual Driver Earphones BRE01JY offer a peculiarly strong isolation for a semi-in-ear headphone; of course do not expect an absolute isolation nor a very strong reduction of your surrounding’s awareness.

As a reference, expect something mediumly less isolating than most average in-ear headphones.

Comfort

One highly common issue of earbuds is that they do not hold in place inside the ears, Xiaomi somehow leveled-up their fit making them stay in place under normally intense and daily activities. A positive feature of this type of headphones is that the absence of nozzles makes them less invasive to your inner ear.

Earbuds and their fit have some fans that love them and other hating them, it is a matter of taste.

If you like earbuds or already own some, you will get a nice sounding semi-in-ear headphone with a specially open and spatial sound after an EQ.
